Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Zechariah 1 - The Horses and the Horns: Zechariah begins with a call to repentance. He then sees a vision of horses among myrtle trees (God’s patrol of the earth) and four horns (nations that scattered Israel) being cast down by four carpenters.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. Divine Jealousy: God declares He is "jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy" (v. 14).
2. God’s Patrol: The riders on horses show that God is actively monitoring the state of the nations even when they seem at rest.
3. Restoration of Comfort: God promises that His cities shall yet be spread abroad through prosperity.
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Return to Me: The foundation of all blessing is the command: "Turn ye unto me... and I will turn unto you."
2. God’s Counter-Measures: For every "horn" (power) that tries to destroy God’s work, He has a "carpenter" (skilled instrument) ready to dismantle it.
