Chapter Study & Analysis

Zechariah 4 - The Golden Candlestick: A vision of a golden candlestick fed by two olive trees. An angel explains that the work of rebuilding the Temple will be completed "not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit."

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Seven Eyes (v. 10): Representing the oniscience and perfect oversight of God over the earth.
2. The Two Anointed Ones: Historically referring to Zerubbabel and Joshua, but typologically pointing to the kingly and priestly offices of Christ.
3. Grace to the Capstone: The completion of the work will be celebrated with shouts of "Grace, grace unto it!"

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Reliance on the Spirit: Human strength and political power are insufficient for God’s work; the Holy Spirit is the true source of success.
2. Despise Not Small Things: "Who hath despised the day of small things?" (v. 10). God’s greatest works often begin in ways that look insignificant to human eyes.
