Chapter Study & Analysis

Colossians 1 presents the preeminence of Christ as the Creator and the Head of the Church. Paul prays for the believers to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will and describes the mystery of the Gospel: "Christ in you, the hope of glory."

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Preeminence of Christ: He is before all things, and by Him all things consist (v. 17). We must ensure that Jesus holds the "first place" in our priorities, decisions, and worship.
2. Reconciled by His Death: We were once alienated and enemies, but now are reconciled in the body of His flesh through death (v. 21-22). Our standing before God is based entirely on His finished work.
3. Walking Worthy of the Lord: Our goal is to walk "unto all pleasing," being fruitful in every good work (v. 10). True knowledge of God must always result in a transformed life of service.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: we thank Thee for the inheritance of the saints in light. Fill us with the knowledge of Thy will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that we may walk worthy of Thee unto all pleasing. Amen.
