Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Colossians 4 emphasizes the importance of prayer and wise conduct toward those outside the faith. Paul highlights the value of speech "seasoned with salt" and concludes with personal greetings to his fellow laborers in the Gospel.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Continuance in Prayer: We are to "continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving" (v. 2). Prayer must be a persistent and grateful habit, not just an occasional emergency cry.
2. Graceful Speech: Our speech should be "alway with grace, seasoned with salt" (v. 6). We must know how to answer every man with both truth and kindness, reflecting the character of our Master.
3. Faithful Coworkers: The mention of Tychicus, Onesimus, and others (v. 7-14) reminds us that the work of God is a collective effort. Every "Archippus" in the church must "take heed to the ministry" they have received (v. 17).
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, open unto us a door of utterance to speak the mystery of Christ. Grant us the wisdom to walk toward them that are without, redeeming the time, and let our speech be always with grace, to the edification of all who hear. Amen.
