Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Timothy 4 contains Paul’s final charge to "preach the word" in and out of season. He triumphantly declares that he has "fought a good fight" and "finished his course," ending with personal requests and a final benediction of grace.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Preach the Word: We must be instant in season and out of season, reproving and exhorting with all longsuffering (v. 2). The proclamation of the Word is the church’s primary mission, regardless of the cultural climate.
2. Finishing Well: Paul’s goal was to finish his course with joy (v. 7). We should live with the end in mind, striving to be able to say at the end of our lives that we have kept the faith.
3. The Crown of Righteousness: There is a crown laid up for all those who "love his appearing" (v. 8). Our daily labor is motivated by the certain hope of the reward we will receive when we see our Lord face to face.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, give us grace to preach Thy Word and to endure afflictions. Help us to finish our course with joy, that we may receive the crown of righteousness which Thou, the righteous judge, shalt give us at that day. Amen.
