Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Timothy 1 expresses Paul’s affection for Timothy and his gratitude for Timothy’s "unfeigned faith." Paul encourages him to "stir up the gift of God" and not to be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord or of Paul’s imprisonment.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Spirit of Power: God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (v. 7). We must reject timidity in our witness, relying on the Holy Spirit’s enabling.
2. Stirring Up Gifts: Spiritual gifts can become dormant if not exercised (v. 6). We have a responsibility to actively develop and use the talents God has entrusted to us for His service.
3. Holding Fast the Form of Sound Words: We are commanded to hold fast the "form of sound words" in faith and love (v. 13). Correct doctrine is a sacred trust that must be guarded against the erosion of cultural trends.
