Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Timothy 2 uses the metaphors of a soldier, an athlete, and a husbandman to describe the Christian life. Paul exhorts Timothy to "rightly divide the word of truth" and to be a vessel of honor, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Enduring Hardness: As good soldiers of Jesus Christ, we must expect and endure hardship (v. 3). A soldier does not entangle himself with the affairs of this life but seeks to please the Captain.
2. Diligent Study: We must "study to shew ourselves approved unto God," rightly dividing the Word (v. 15). This requires effort and precision in interpreting and applying the Scriptures.
3. Fleeing Youthful Lusts: We are called to flee sinful desires and follow righteousness, faith, charity, and peace (v. 22). Purity is a prerequisite for being a vessel that is "meet for the master's use."

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord Jesus, make us faithful soldiers who entangle not ourselves with the world. Grant us the wisdom to rightly divide Thy Word and the grace to be vessels of honor, sanctified and prepared for every good work. Amen.
