2 Timothy 2 Study & Commentary
2 Timothy 2 uses the metaphors of a soldier, an athlete, and a husbandman to describe the Christian life. Paul exhorts Timothy to "rightly divide the word of truth" and to be a vessel of honor, sanctified and meet for the Master’s use.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Enduring Hardness: As good soldiers of Jesus Christ, we must expect and endure hardship (v. 3). A soldier does not entangle himself with the affairs of this life but seeks to please the Captain.2. Diligent Study: We must "study to shew ourselves approved unto God," rightly dividing the Word (v. 15). This requires effort and precision in interpreting and applying the Scriptures.
3. Fleeing Youthful Lusts: We are called to flee sinful desires and follow righteousness, faith, charity, and peace (v. 22). Purity is a prerequisite for being a vessel that is "meet for the master's use."
