Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Titus 1 establishes the qualifications for elders in Crete and warns against "unruly and vain talkers," particularly of the circumcision. Paul emphasizes that a leader must hold fast the faithful word to be able to convince the gainsayers.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Integrity in Leadership: An elder must be "blameless, as the steward of God" (v. 7). Leadership is not about power, but about a life that is "sober, just, holy, and temperate."
2. Confronting Error: There are times when mouths "must be stopped" (v. 11). We must have the courage to protect the flock from teaching that is motivated by "filthy lucre" or cultural myths.
3. Purity of Heart: "Unto the pure all things are pure" (v. 15). Our external actions and perceptions are a reflection of our internal spiritual state. If our mind and conscience are defiled, our "works" will eventually reveal it.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Almighty God, who hast ordained that Thy Church be led by faithful men: grant us leaders who are lovers of hospitality and of good men. Help us to hold fast the faithful Word, that we may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. Amen.
