Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Timothy 5 provides instructions on how to treat different groups within the church: elders, younger men, widows, and elders who rule well. Paul emphasizes the importance of providing for one’s own family and maintaining justice without partiality.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Honoring the Family: If any provide not for his own, he has "denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel" (v. 8). Practical care for our relatives is a core requirement of the Christian life.
2. Double Honour for Leaders: Elders who labor in the word and doctrine are worthy of "double honour" and support (v. 17). We should value and sustain those who faithfully teach us the Scriptures.
3. Avoiding Partiality: Paul charges Timothy to observe these things "without preferring one before another" (v. 21). Justice in the church must be blind to status, wealth, or personal friendship.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, grant us wisdom to honor those to whom honor is due. Help us to provide for our households and to walk in such purity and justice that we bring no reproach upon Thy holy Name. Amen.
