Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Timothy 3 outlines the qualifications for bishops (overseers) and deacons. Paul emphasizes that leadership in the church is a "good work" that requires high moral character, and he concludes with the "mystery of godliness" concerning Christ.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Character Over Charisma: Leaders must be "blameless," "sober," and "apt to teach" (v. 2). The internal character of a leader is more important to God than their public talents.
2. Managing the Home: A leader must rule his own house well, for if he cannot manage his family, he cannot care for the church of God (v. 4-5). Integrity begins in the most private spheres of life.
3. The Pillar of Truth: The church is the "pillar and ground of the truth" (v. 15). We have a collective responsibility to uphold and defend the orthodox faith against the pressures of the world.

FORMAL PRAYER

Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. Help us, O Lord, to behave ourselves rightly in Thy house. Amen.
