1 Timothy 4 Study & Commentary

1 Timothy 4 warns of a coming "departure from the faith" involving asceticism and false teaching. Paul encourages Timothy to be an example to the believers in word, conversation, charity, spirit, faith, and purity.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Discerning False Asceticism: Every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving (v. 4). We must avoid legalistic rules that forbid what God has sanctified.
2. Exercise Unto Godliness: While bodily exercise profits little, godliness is profitable unto all things (v. 8). We should prioritize our spiritual discipline with the same intensity athletes give to their bodies.
3. Setting the Example: "Let no man despise thy youth" (v. 12). Age is no excuse for spiritual immaturity. Every believer is called to be a visible model of Christ’s character to others.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, help us to give attendance to reading, to exhortation, and to doctrine. Let our profiting appear to all, as we take heed unto ourselves and unto the doctrine, continuing in them for the salvation of many. Amen.
