Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Ruth 3 involves Naomi’s plan for Ruth to seek redemption from Boaz. Ruth visits the threshing floor at night and asks Boaz to "spread thy skirt over thine handmaid," a symbolic request for him to fulfill his role as her kinsman-redeemer.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Boldness with Integrity: Ruth’s request was bold but made with pure intentions (v. 9). We should not fear to ask God—or those He has placed in authority—for the protection and redemption we need.
2. A Reputation for Virtue: Boaz knew Ruth was a "virtuous woman" (v. 11). Our character in "small" things builds a reputation that precedes us and opens doors for our future.
3. Resting in the Outcome: Naomi told Ruth to "sit still... until thou know how the matter will fall" (v. 18). After doing all we can in obedience, we must trust God to finalize the details of our deliverance.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, spread Thy garment of protection over us. Grant us a reputation for virtue and the patience to "sit still" and wait for Thy salvation after we have performed our duty in faith. Amen.
