Chapter Study & Analysis

Ruth 2 describes Ruth gleaning in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Elimelech. Boaz notices her diligence and kindness to Naomi, providing her with protection and extra grain, fulfilling the law of gleaning with great generosity.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Diligence in the Field: Ruth did not wait for a miracle; she went to work (v. 2, 7). God often meets us and opens doors of favor while we are actively fulfilling our daily responsibilities.
2. The Character of a Provider: Boaz went beyond the letter of the law to show "hesed" (loving-kindness) to a stranger (v. 15-16). Those with resources should seek ways to protect and dignify the vulnerable laborers.
3. Under His Wings: Boaz speaks of Ruth finding refuge under the wings of the Lord (v. 12). When we step out in faith, God uses human instruments to provide the security we need.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, we thank Thee for Thy providential care. Grant us the industry to work faithfully in the fields where Thou hast placed us, and a heart of generosity to leave "handfuls of purpose" for those in need. Amen.
