Chapter Study & Analysis

Malachi 1 - The Polluted Altar: God affirms His love for Jacob over Esau, but rebukes the priests for despising His name. They offer blind, lame, and sick animals as sacrifices—things they wouldn’t dare offer to a human governor. God declares His name shall be great among the Gentiles.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Election and Love: "I have loved you, saith the Lord" (v. 2). God reminds Israel of their covenant status despite their ingratitude.
2. The Table of the Lord: The altar was being treated as "contemptible," showing a total lack of reverence for God’s holiness.
3. Universal Worship: A prophecy that God will be honored among the "heathen" from the rising to the setting of the sun.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Giving our Best: God is not honored by "leftovers" or heartless religious service. If it’s worth doing for God, it’s worth our best effort.
2. Reverence: Our worship reflects our view of God. Casual or "sick" worship reveals a small view of a Great King.
