Chapter Study & Analysis

Galatians 4 explains the transition from being servants under the Law to being sons and heirs of God. Paul uses the allegory of Sarah and Hagar to contrast the covenant of slavery (the Law) with the covenant of freedom (the Promise).

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Spirit of Adoption: God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba, Father" (v. 6). We should live with the intimacy and security of children who are loved by their Creator.
2. Avoiding Ritualism: Paul was concerned that the Galatians were returning to "weak and beggarly elements" (v. 9). We must guard against replacing a living relationship with Christ with empty religious rituals.
3. Christ Formed in Us: Paul travailed in birth until Christ was "formed" in the believers (v. 19). The goal of all discipleship is the internal formation of the character of Jesus in the life of the Christian.

FORMAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we thank Thee for sending Thy Son to redeem us, that we might receive the adoption of sons. Keep us from returning to any form of spiritual bondage, and let Christ be fully formed in us by Thy Holy Spirit. Amen.
