Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Galatians 3 rebukes the Galatians for trying to "perfect" in the flesh what began in the Spirit. Paul argues that the Law was a "schoolmaster" to lead us to Christ, and that through faith, we are all children of God and heirs of the promise to Abraham.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Spirit vs. Flesh: Having begun in the Spirit, we cannot be made perfect by human effort (v. 3). Christian growth is as much a work of grace as our initial conversion was.
2. The Purpose of the Law: The Law shows us our sin and our need for a Savior (v. 24). We should appreciate the Law for its diagnostic power but never look to it for our salvation.
3. Equality in Christ: In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female (v. 28). The Gospel obliterates worldly hierarchies, making all believers equal heirs of God’s Kingdom.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O God, who didst give the promise to Abraham and his Seed: we thank Thee for our adoption as Thy children. Help us to rest in the finished work of Christ and to walk in the unity of the Spirit with all our brothers and sisters. Amen.
