Chapter Study & Analysis

Galatians 2 describes Paul’s confrontation with Peter in Antioch over legalistic separation from Gentiles. It concludes with the foundational truth of justification by faith and the reality of the believer being crucified with Christ.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Resisting Hypocrisy: Paul withstood Peter to his face because he was not walking uprightly according to the Gospel (v. 11-14). We must have the courage to correct legalism and hypocrisy, regardless of the status of the person involved.
2. Justified by Faith: A man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ (v. 16). This is the "Articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae" (the article by which the church stands or falls).
3. The Crucified Life: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me" (v. 20). Our old self is dead; our current life is sustained and directed by the Son of God.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord Jesus, who didst love us and give Thyself for us: we thank Thee that our righteousness is found in Thee alone. Grant that we may live this day by faith, and let Thy life be manifested in everything we do. Amen.
