Chapter Study & Analysis

Ephesians 2 contrasts our past state of being "dead in trespasses and sins" with our current life in Christ. Paul explains that we are saved by grace through faith and that Christ has broken down the "middle wall of partition" between Jews and Gentiles.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Grace Over Works: Salvation is a gift of God, "not of works, lest any man should boast" (v. 8-9). We must base our assurance on God’s favor rather than our own performance.
2. God’s Workmanship: We are His "workmanship," created for good works (v. 10). Grace does not lead to passivity but to a life of purposeful service ordained by God.
3. Unity in the Body: Christ has made both Jew and Gentile "one new man" (v. 15). The Gospel is the ultimate solution to racial and ethnic divisions, building us together into a holy temple in the Lord.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, who hast quickened us when we were dead in sin: we thank Thee for the exceeding riches of Thy grace. Help us to walk in the good works Thou hast prepared and to live in unity with all Thy people. Amen.
