Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Daniel 5 - The Writing on the Wall: King Belshazzar uses the sacred Temple vessels for a drunken feast. A hand appears writing on the wall (Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin). Daniel interprets the judgment, and that night Babylon falls to the Medes.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Sin of Sacrilege: Profaning what is dedicated to God (the vessels) brings swift and final judgment.
2. The Weight of the Soul: "Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting" (v. 27).
3. Ignoring History: Belshazzar is rebuked for knowing what happened to his father (Nebuchadnezzar) and yet hardening his heart.
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. The God of our Breath: "The God in whose hand thy breath is... hast thou not glorified." Every breath is a gift to be used for His glory.
2. Judgment is Certain: Even when the world is partying, the "writing on the wall" of judgment may already be appearing.
