Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Peter 1 emphasizes the "lively hope" we have through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Peter explains that trials serve to refine faith like gold in the furnace and exhorts believers to be holy in all manner of conversation, as God is holy.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Hope in Trials: Our inheritance is incorruptible and reserved in heaven (v. 4). This eternal perspective allows us to rejoice even when "in heaviness through manifold temptations."
2. The Trial of Faith: The testing of our faith is "much more precious than of gold that perisheth" (v. 7). We should see difficulties as God’s refining process to produce praise and honor at Christ’s appearing.
3. Call to Holiness: "As he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation" (v. 15). Holiness is not an option for the believer; it is a fundamental requirement of our identity in Christ.

FORMAL PRAYER

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope. Sanctify us, O Lord, that we may be holy as Thou art holy, being redeemed by the precious blood of Christ. Amen.
