Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

James 5 Study & Commentary

James 5 warns the rich who oppress the poor and exhorts the suffering to be patient until the coming of the Lord. It concludes with instructions on the power of prayer, the anointing of the sick, and the restoration of those who wander from the truth.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Patience in Suffering: We are to be patient like the husbandman waiting for the precious fruit of the earth (v. 7). The Lord’s return is the ultimate resolution to all earthly injustice.
2. The Prayer of Faith: The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (v. 16). We should never underestimate the power of prayer in physical healing and spiritual restoration.
3. Restoring the Erring: If any err from the truth, we have a responsibility to seek their conversion and restoration (v. 19-20). This work "shall hide a multitude of sins" and save a soul from death.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, grant us patience unto Thy coming and establish our hearts in Thy Truth. We thank Thee for the power of prayer; grant that we may use it fervently for the healing of the sick and the restoration of the fallen. Amen.
