Chapter Study & Analysis

1 Peter 2 describes believers as "lively stones" being built into a spiritual house. Peter identifies the church as a "chosen generation" and a "royal priesthood," calling them to submit to authorities and to follow the example of Christ’s suffering.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Our Royal Identity: We are a "chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" (v. 9). This identity is given so that we may "shew forth the praises" of Him who called us out of darkness.
2. Strangers and Pilgrims: As temporary residents on earth, we must abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul (v. 11). Our citizenship is heavenly, and our conduct should reflect that higher allegiance.
3. Following His Steps: Christ suffered for us, leaving an example that we should follow His steps (v. 21). When we suffer wrongfully, we are to commit ourselves to Him that judgeth righteously, without returning evil for evil.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord, who hast called us out of darkness into Thy marvelous light: help us as lively stones to be built up a spiritual house. Grant us grace to follow the steps of Thy Son, who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth. Amen.
