Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Titus 3 exhorts believers to be subject to authorities and to be "ready to every good work." Paul reminds them that they were saved by the "washing of regeneration," and warns against "foolish questions" and "strivings about the law."
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Submission and Gentleness: We are called to be subject to principalities and to be "gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men" (v. 1-2). Our witness to the world is often found in our civil obedience and kind disposition.
2. Not by Works of Righteousness: We are saved according to His mercy, by the "washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" (v. 5). This prevents any legalistic pride and keeps our focus on the finished work of Christ.
3. Avoiding Unprofitable Strife: We are commanded to avoid "foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions" (v. 9). We must focus our energy on "maintaining good works" for necessary uses, rather than wasting time on vain theological debates.
