Chapter Study & Analysis

Philippians 3 warns against legalism and relying on "fleshly" credentials. Paul describes his own transition from a Pharisee to a follower of Christ, stating that he counts all things as "loss" for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Worth of Christ: Everything we once valued—status, achievements, religion—is "dung" compared to knowing Christ (v. 8). We must be willing to let go of earthly pride to gain heavenly righteousness.
2. Pressing Toward the Mark: We must forget those things which are behind and reach forward to those which are before (v. 13-14). We should not be paralyzed by past failures or satisfied with past successes.
3. Heavenly Citizenship: Our "conversation" (citizenship) is in heaven (v. 20). We should live as temporary residents on earth, with our primary allegiance and hope set on our eternal home.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, grant that we may be found in Christ, not having our own righteousness, but that which is through faith. Help us to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
