Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Philippians 2 contains the "Kenosis" passage, describing Christ’s supreme humility in taking the form of a servant. Paul exhorts believers to have this same mind, to work out their salvation with fear, and to shine as lights in a dark world.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Mind of Christ: We are told to let the same humble mind be in us that was in Jesus (v. 5). True greatness in the Kingdom is found in serving others and putting their interests above our own.
2. Shining as Lights: In the midst of a "crooked and perverse nation," we are to shine as lights in the world (v. 15). Our distinct moral character and joy should make us stand out as beacons of hope.
3. God Working in Us: While we "work out" our salvation, it is God who "worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (v. 12-13). Our efforts are sustained by His sovereign power.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Thyself of no reputation: grant us Thy spirit of humility. Help us to do all things without murmurings and disputings, shining as lights in this world. Amen.
