Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Jonah 3 - The Repentance of Nineveh: God gives Jonah a second chance. He preaches a simple message of judgment in Nineveh. From the King to the animals, the city fasts and turns from their evil way, and God relents from the disaster.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The God of the Second Chance (v. 1): "The word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time."2. The Power of the Word: A five-word sermon (in Hebrew) causes an entire pagan empire to repent.
3. Conditional Prophecy: God’s warnings of judgment are often invitations to repentance; when the people change, God "changes" His course of action.
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Never Underestimate the Message: It is the Word of God, not the eloquence of the messenger, that transforms hearts.
2. Universal Mercy: God is interested in the salvation of even the most "wicked" and unlikely people groups.
