Chapter Study & Analysis

Jonah 1 - The Flight to Tarshish: God commands Jonah to go to Nineveh, but he flees in the opposite direction to Tarshish. A great storm arises, and Jonah is cast into the sea by the sailors after confessing he is fleeing from God. A great fish swallows him.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Omnipresence vs. Geography: Jonah learns that one cannot flee from the "presence of the Lord" (v. 3).
2. God of the Sea and Dry Land: The storm and the fish are under God’s absolute sovereignty, serving His redemptive purposes.
3. Gentile Responsiveness: The pagan sailors show more fear and reverence for God than the rebellious prophet initially does.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Price of Disobedience: Fleeing from God’s will always leads "downward"—to Joppa, into the ship, and into the sea.
2. Your Sin Affects Others: Jonah’s rebellion endangered everyone on the ship. Our private choices have public consequences.
