Chapter Study & Analysis

James 2 rebukes the sin of partiality, specifically toward the wealthy. The core of the chapter is the famous argument that "faith without works is dead," illustrating that true saving faith will always manifest itself in righteous actions and compassion.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. No Respect of Persons: We must not have the faith of our Lord Jesus with respect of persons (v. 1). Discriminating based on wealth or status is a sin against the "royal law" of love.
2. The Nature of Saving Faith: Even the devils believe and tremble (v. 19). Intellectual assent is not enough; true faith is a living, working trust in God that produces a transformed life.
3. Mercy Rejoiceth Against Judgment: We shall be judged by the law of liberty (v. 12-13). We should show mercy to others as we have received mercy from God, for he shall have judgment without mercy that hath shewed no mercy.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty God, who hast chosen the poor of this world rich in faith: deliver us from all partiality. Grant that our faith may be proven by our works, and let Thy mercy always rejoice against judgment in our lives. Amen.
