Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
3 John is a personal letter to Gaius, commending him for his hospitality and faithfulness to the truth. John contrasts the godly character of Demetrius with the prideful rebellion of Diotrephes, who loved to have the preeminence among the brethren.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Spiritual Prosperity: John prays that Gaius may "prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth" (v. 2). True well-being begins with a soul that is healthy and walking in the truth.2. Supporting the Truth: We ought to receive and support those who go forth for the Name of Christ, that we might be "fellowhelpers to the truth" (v. 8). Hospitality is a vital ministry for the expansion of the Gospel.
3. Avoiding Preeminence: Diotrephes is rebuked for "loving to have the preeminence" (v. 9). We must guard against pride in church leadership and follow that which is good, for he that doeth good is of God.
