Chapter Study & Analysis

The Epistle of Jude is a vigorous appeal to "earnestly contend for the faith." Jude warns against ungodly men who have crept in unawares, using historical examples of divine judgment (Egypt, fallen angels, Sodom) to illustrate their certain end, while exhorting believers to build themselves up in the holy faith.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Contending for the Faith: We must earnestly defend the faith "once delivered unto the saints" (v. 3). Doctrine is not a fluid concept that changes with culture; it is a sacred deposit that must be protected.
2. The Danger of Apostasy: Ungodly men turn the grace of God into lasciviousness (v. 4). We must beware of any teaching that uses God’s mercy as an excuse for habitual sin or moral compromise.
3. Kept by God: While we are told to "keep yourselves in the love of God," the letter ends with the assurance that He is "able to keep you from falling" (v. 21, 24). Our perseverance is ultimately sustained by His power and presentation of us faultless before His glory.

FORMAL PRAYER

Now unto him that is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy: To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
