Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 John is addressed to the "elect lady and her children," emphasizing the necessity of walking in truth and love. The apostle warns against deceivers who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, commanding believers not to receive such into their houses.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Walking in Truth: Love and truth are inseparable; we cannot truly love if we abandon the truth of the Gospel (v. 3-6). Our walk must be governed by the commandments of God.
2. The Doctrine of Christ: Whosoever abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God (v. 9). We must be vigilant against "progressive" teachings that move away from the foundational apostolic witness.
3. Biblical Separation: If there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house (v. 10). We must protect the local church and our homes from the influence of those who actively promote heresy.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Grant us, O Lord, to walk in truth and to abide in the doctrine of Thy Son, that we may lose not those things which we have wrought. Amen.
