2 Thessalonians 3 concludes with a request for prayer and a stern warning against idleness. Paul commands the church to withdraw from those who walk "disorderly" and reinforces the principle that "if any would not work, neither should he eat."
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Pray for the Word: We should pray that the Word of the Lord may "have free course, and be glorified" (v. 1). The success of the Gospel depends on divine intervention against "unreasonable and wicked men."2. The Discipline of Work: Even in expectation of the Lord’s return, believers must lead quiet lives and work for their own bread (v. 12). Escapism or laziness is not a Christian virtue; productivity is an act of obedience.
3. Weariness in Well-Doing: "Be not weary in well doing" (v. 13). When results are slow or opposition is high, we must rely on the Lord to "direct our hearts into the love of God" to keep us moving forward.
