Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Lamentations 4 - The Tarnished Gold: A contrast between the former glory of Zion and its present state of degradation. The "precious sons of Zion" are now esteemed as "earthen pitchers," and the chapter ends with an oracle against Edom.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Degradation of Sin: Gold becomes dim and fine gold is changed (v. 1), representing the loss of the spiritual and moral value of the nation.
2. The Punishment of Iniquity: Judah's punishment is described as greater than that of Sodom (v. 6) because they had the light of the Law and rejected it.
3. Judgment of Edom: Warning that the "cup" will pass to Edom also, for their joy over Zion's fall.
