Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Lamentations 1 - The Deserted City: Jerusalem is personified as a widow and a captive princess weeping in the night. The prophet acknowledges that her "filthiness is in her skirts" and that the Lord has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. Personification of Grief: Zion is seen as a woman who has lost everything. Her "lovers" (allies) have betrayed her.
2. Divine Justice: "The Lord is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment" (v. 18). A key theological shift from complaining to confessing.
3. The Silent God: In this chapter, God does not speak; He is the subject of the prophet's observation and the author of the judgment.
