As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.

Hosea 11 Study & Commentary

Hosea 11 - The Father’s Compassion: A tender chapter where God describes Israel as a child whom He called out of Egypt. Despite their rebellion, God’s "heart is turned within him," and He promises He will not execute the fierceness of His anger.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. "Out of Egypt have I called my son" (v. 1): Historically referring to the Exodus, and typologically fulfilled in Jesus (Matthew 2:15).
2. Divine Compassion: "How shall I give thee up, Ephraim?" God expresses the tension between His justice and His parental love.
3. God vs. Man: "For I am God, and not man" (v. 9). God's mercy transcends human logic or capacity for forgiveness.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. God as Father: Understanding God’s discipline as coming from a place of deep, agonizing love.
2. Incomprehensible Grace: God is willing to "hold back" the full weight of deserved judgment because of His character.
