Chapter Study & Analysis

Haggai 1 - Consider Your Ways: Haggai rebukes the people for living in "cieled houses" while the Lord’s house lies waste. He explains that their lack of harvest and financial struggle is due to their misplaced priorities. The leaders (Zerubbabel and Joshua) and the people obey and begin to work on the Temple.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Priority of Worship: The physical Temple was the center of the Covenant. Neglecting it was a sign of a heart that no longer valued God’s presence.
2. Divine Discipline: "Ye have sown much, and bring in little" (v. 6). God used nature and economy to signal His displeasure with their spiritual apathy.
3. The Response of Remnant: A rare moment in prophetic history where the people immediately "feared before the Lord" and obeyed.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. First Things First: Our relationship with God and His work should take precedence over our personal comforts.
2. Financial Insight: If we find ourselves working hard but "putting wages into a bag with holes," we should examine our spiritual alignment.
