Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Peter 3 addresses scoffers who doubt the return of Christ. Peter explains that God is not slack concerning His promise but is longsuffering, and he describes the future destruction of the world by fire, urging believers to live in holiness.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God’s Perspective on Time: One day is with the Lord as a thousand years (v. 8). We should not mistake God’s patience for indifference; His delay is an opportunity for repentance.
2. Looking for New Heavens: Since everything we see will be dissolved, we should live in "all holy conversation and godliness" (v. 11-13). Our hope is fixed on a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells.
3. Growing in Grace: The final command of the apostle is to "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (v. 18). Stagnation is the first step toward falling from our own steadfastness.
