Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Peter 1 emphasizes the divine power that has given believers everything pertaining to life and godliness. Peter urges Christians to add to their faith virtue, knowledge, and love, and affirms that the prophetic Word is a sure light in a dark place.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Partakers of the Divine Nature: Through God’s "exceeding great and precious promises," we can escape the corruption of the world (v. 4). We must rely on His power to transform our character.
2. Giving Diligence: We are called to "give diligence to make your calling and election sure" (v. 10). Spiritual security is accompanied by an active pursuit of growth in grace and Christian virtues.
3. The Authority of Scripture: Prophecy came not by the will of man, but holy men of God spake as they were "moved by the Holy Ghost" (v. 21). We must trust the Bible as a divinely inspired, objective source of truth.
