Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
1 John 2 describes Christ as our Advocate and the propitiation for our sins. John warns against loving the world, identifies the spirit of the antichrist, and exhorts believers to abide in Christ to have confidence at His coming.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Our Heavenly Advocate: When we sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (v. 1). We do not stand alone in judgment; Christ represents us.
2. Love Not the World: If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him (v. 15). We must guard our hearts against the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
3. Abiding in Him: To abide in Christ means to remain in His doctrine and fellowship (v. 24-28). This constancy is the only way to avoid being ashamed when He appears.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Almighty Father, grant us the grace to love Thee more than the world and the things that are in the world. Help us to abide in Thy Son, our Advocate, that we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. Amen.
