Chapter Study & Analysis

Zephaniah 2 - Judgment on the Nations: Before the decree brings forth the judgment, the "meek of the earth" are told to seek the Lord. Judgment is pronounced on the Philistines, Moab, Ammon, Ethiopia, and Assyria (Nineveh), turning their cities into wilderness.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. A Hiding Place: "It may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger" (v. 3). Seeking righteousness is the only security.
2. The Remnant of Judah: God judges the nations to prepare a place where the "remnant of his people" shall possess the land and find rest.
3. The Pride of Nineveh: Rebuking the city that said in her heart, "I am, and there is none beside me" (v. 15), mimicking God's own claim to deity.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Seeking Meekness: In a world of pride, the "meek" are those who have the best chance of finding God’s protection.
2. Divine Vindication: God hears the "reproaches" and "revilings" against His people and will eventually settle the accounts.
