Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Nahum 2 - The Fall of the City: A graphic description of the siege and fall of Nineveh. The chariots rage in the streets, the river gates are opened, and the "bloody city" is plundered. The "dwelling of the lions" (Assyria’s power) is destroyed.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. Divine Strategy: God is the one "against" Nineveh (v. 13), cutting off her messengers and burning her chariots.
2. The Dissolving Palace: The prophecy that the "palace shall be dissolved" was literally fulfilled when the Tigris River flooded and breached the walls.
3. Empty Glory: Nineveh, which once plundered nations, is now left "empty, and void, and waste."
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Wealth cannot save: All the "silver and gold" of Nineveh could not buy its safety when God’s judgment arrived.
2. Sovereignty over Military Might: The most advanced military of the ancient world was useless once God turned against them.
