Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Amos 6 - Woe to the Complacent: Amos pronounces a "woe" on those who are "at ease in Zion" and trust in the mountain of Samaria. He describes their life of luxury—beds of ivory, feasting, and music—while they are "not grieved for the affliction of Joseph."
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Sin of Complacency: Spiritual and social indifference is presented as a capital offense when judgment is at the door.
2. The Affliction of Joseph: A term for the suffering of the Northern Kingdom. The elite ignored the structural collapse of their society.
3. Divine Abhorrence: God declares He "abhors the excellency of Jacob" (v. 8), meaning their prideful buildings and status symbols.

2. Grief for the Broken: A mark of godliness is being "grieved" by the spiritual and physical affliction of our neighbors.
